On 6/12/19 the Planning Board awarded 144 Canal St a decision that included a Drive Through Special Permit. Originally the applicant applied for seven (7) wall signs and five (5) freestanding signs. Since the original application, the applicant has revised so the application now includes eight (8) wall signs and two (2) freestanding signs. The proposal includes directional signage. Per Sec. 4-51(a) of the Code of Ordinanaces directional signs "necessary for public safety and convenience which do not exceed 12 square feet per face and which bear no advertising" are allowed, and "such signs are not counted in computing total sign area allowed by this section". The original proposal included two menu boards. Per Sec. 6.7.6 Standards of the Zoning Ordinance: "Menu boards shall be a maximum of thirty (30) square feet, with a maximum height of six (6) feet and shall be shielded from any public street and residential properties". The Planning Board decision (6/12/19) reiterated the menu board standard, with slight alterations: "Menu board shall be a maximum of 30 square feet, with a maximum height of six (6) and shall be shielded from the residential building". The project plans submitted reference by the decision show only one menu board, while the original sign permit application showed two signs, whose combined total sign area were less than thirty (30) square feet. I instructed the applicant to submit a letter to the Plannign Director requesting an amendment to the original PB decision. This application no longer inclides the menu boards - those will proceed seperately pending the Planning Dir's decision. Lastly, please let me know what the estimated total cost is for all the manufacture and install of all the signs in this final iteration of the permit. The cost of the permit is based on this manufacturing and install cost, so I will make sure you are not charged for the cost of the signs you are no longer applying for. With your confirmation that the Sign Review form is accurate, and a new cost estimate I will pass on these permits for payment, final review, and approval. Our customer is asking if we can go for a variance to be able to have this? Since this is a change to a Planning Board decision, you would submit a letter requesting the change (you can email this to me). I will forward it to the Planning Director, who will determine if the change is significant enough to warrant an amendment from the Planning Board. If he deems it insignificant, the menu boards would be approved, if he deems it significant then you would need to apply for an amendment from the Planning Board. R3) Provide measurements for the "Starbucks" sign on the side of the canopy structure so it can be added to the total sign area. Note #8 calls them out as 4 7/16” and span is shown on drawings as 42 ½”. I’ve attached the drawing with the measurements highlighted. Thank you for this.
