On 6/12/19 the Planning Board awarded 144 Canal St a decision that included a Drive Through Special Permit. Originally the applicant applied for seven (7) wall signs and five (5) freestanding signs. Since the original application, the applicant has revised so the application now includes eight (8) wall signs and two (2) freestanding signs. The proposal includes directional signage. Per Sec. 4-51(a) of the Code of Ordinanaces directional signs "necessary for public safety and convenience which do not exceed 12 square feet per face and which bear no advertising" are allowed, and "such signs are not counted in computing total sign area allowed by this section". The original proposal included two menu boards. Per Sec. 6.7.6 Standards of the Zoning Ordinance: "Menu boards shall be a maximum of thirty (30) square feet, with a maximum height of six (6) feet and shall be shielded from any public street and residential properties". The Planning Board decision (6/12/19) reiterated the menu board standard, with slight alterations: "Menu board shall be a maximum of 30 square feet, with a maximum height of six (6) and shall be shielded from the residential building". The project plans submitted reference by the decision show only one menu board, while the original sign permit application showed two signs, whose combined total sign area were less than thirty (30) square feet. I instructed the applicant to submit a letter to the Plannign Director requesting an amendment to the original PB decision. This application no longer inclides the menu boards - those will proceed seperately pending the Planning Dir's decision.
