SALEM HISTORICAL COMMISSION PRACTICE REGARDING CHIMNEY CAPS
The Salem Historical Commission allows the installation of metal chimney caps on historic chimneys provided that the
caps are designed and installed in a manner that does not diminish the original design of the chimney or damage historic
materials. The Commission will not approve the removal of an historic masonry chimney cap or terra cotta chimney
pot for a new metal cap.
The Commission will consider metal chimney caps that meet the following guidelines:
1) Fabricated of heavy gauge galvanized or stainless steel or copper;
2) Size is appropriately scaled to dimensions of chimney top;
3) Height is appropriately scaled to height of chimney;
4) Design includes hood with roll-formed edges and ¾” mesh; and
5) Entire cap is finished in a dark gray matte finish.
Owners of designated properties in Salem may apply for this type of chimney cap through a Certificate of
Appropriateness under the category of “minor change”. After determining that the size, design, material and color of
the proposed metal chimney cap complies with the standards established by the Commission and that the installation
will not remove or damage historic materials, the Commission will dispense with a public hearing after owners of all
adjoining properties are notified and no objections are received.
