5 BROAD STREET_CofA_ REVISED APPROVAL OF RENOVATIONS
Photo of Shot Tower before renovation project The Bates textile mill was founded in 1850 by Benjamin E. Bates and a group of entrepreneurial co-investors. The waterway, Lewiston Falls, provided the initial power for the weaving and spinning looms. Lewiston was a destination city as the mill provided many jobs, even during the American Civil War, as the factory produced Union Army textiles. After production halted, the complex was purchased and renovated by a private developer, Platz Associates. The Lofts at Bates Mill, formally known as Bates Manufacturing Company Mill No. 2, measures 65,000 square feet. Facing West onto Fountain Park, each apartment will have expansive views toward the Androscoggin River and the City of Auburn. Its location at the heart of Lewiston’s redeveloping Riverfront Island District includes offices, restaurants and shops. Four floors of the building will be converted into 48 one, two and three- bedroom apartments, taking advantage of the beautiful architectural amenities of the mill. These include 13 foot ceilings, large windows and exposed timber framing. A solar-powered hot water system and “Green” building standards ensure exceptional indoor air quality.
