Design Review Board Sign Recommendation
18 Hawthorne Boulevard – Fisher and Orfaly Dental Sign
Meeting Date: December 16, 2020
Members Present: Paul Durand, Chair, Helen Sides, Vice-Chair, David Jaquith, Glenn Kennedy,
Catherine Miller, Marc Perras, J. Michael Sullivan
Members Absent: None
Decision: At a regular meeting of the Design Review Board (DRB), upon a motion duly made and seconded,
it was unanimously voted to recommend approval of the sign proposal as designed and conditioned herein.
Referenced Plans and Documents
1. Sign Proposal, prepared by Vinyl Graphic Works, 30 Doaks Lane, Marblehead, MA 01945, submitted
on 11/21/20.
2. Adjusted sign design, submitted by Glenn Kennedy, 12/17/20.
3. Staff Comments dated 12/9/20.
Condition of Approval
1. Consistency with Design/Plans: Should the applicant determine that the approved sign design may
not be completed as detailed in the plans referenced herein and the following conditions,
he/she/they shall return to the DRB to review proposed modifications prior to making any changes
in the field.
2. Sign Installation: When possible, use existing holes to install the bracket to hang the sign. If there
are no existing holes, rather than drilling into brick, the anchors should go into the mortar, which is
an easier repair should the sign need to be removed.
3. Exterior Illumination of Sign: If the applicant determine he would like to install a spotlight on the
sign, he shall come back to the Board for additional design review. At a minimum, the Board will
require a plan showing the location of the light, a specification sheet for the proposed fixture, and
information regarding how the conduit will be installed.
Findings
1. The DRB reviewed the sign proposal and found that the blade sign is consistent with the standards
and guidelines in the SRA Sign Manual and the City of Salem Sign Ordinance.
2. This historic structure does not present a natural sign band for the commercial tenants. The
applicant has thought about the overall building signage and has presented a comprehensive sign
design that advertises the name of the business and includes space for additional tenant signage.
While this application is only for the dental practice, the Board appreciates the aforethought put
into the application and look forward to reviewing future sign applications for the building’s other
tenants.
Signature of the DRB
By the signature below, I certify that this recommendation accurately reflects the actions of the Design
Review Board.
