Design Review Board Sign Recommendation
282 Rear Derby Street
Pentagram Signs
Meeting Date: August 26, 2020
Members Present: Paul Durand, Chair, Helen Sides, Vice-Chair, David Jaquith, Glenn Kennedy,
Catherine Miller, Marc Perras, J. Michael Sullivan
Members Absent: None
Decision: At a regular meeting of the Design Review Board (DRB), upon a motion duly made and seconded,
it was unanimously voted to recommend approval of the sign proposal as designed and conditioned herein.
Referenced Plans and Documents
1. Sign Proposal, prepared by Concept Signs, 57 Bridge Street, Salem, MA 01970
2. Staff Comments dated 8/19/20.
Condition of Approval
1. Consistency with Design/Plans: Should the applicant determine that the approved sign design may
not be completed as detailed in the plans referenced herein and the following conditions,
he/she/they shall return to the DRB to review proposed modifications prior to making any changes
in the field.
2. Adjustment of Text: To increase readability, the text on both the wall sign and the projecting sign
should be adjusted as follows:
a. Decrease the space between the capital letters in ‘Pentagram’;
b. Lower the pentagram symbol a touch to better incorporate it into the text; and
c. Move ‘Witchcraft & Magick’ down so that it is closer to ‘Shoppe’, which will provide more
space for the name of the store to be the focus of the sign.
3. Sign Installation: When possible, use existing holes to install the new signs. If there are no existing
holes, rather than drilling into brick, the anchors should go into the mortar, which is an easier repair
should the signs need to be changed.
Findings
1. The DRB reviewed the sign proposal and found that the proposed signage is consistent with the
standards and guidelines in the SRA Sign Manual and the City of Salem Sign Ordinance.
2. Members appreciated the quirkiness of the sign – the spelling of the text, the use of the pentagram
symbol as the ‘A’, and the black and gold color scheme.
Signature of the DRB
By the signature below, I certify that this recommendation accurately reflects the actions of the Design
Review Board.
