RE: 44_Forrester_Street/14_Essex_Street, _Salemt_Massachusetts
Dear Mr. Munroe :
Please be advised that I have examined various documentation
relative to the use of the above-described premises as a multi-family
dwelling . I have examined extensive census documentation, letters from
residents, a letter from the City of Salem Assessor ' s Office, a letter
from Massachusetts Electric Company and a letter from a former
Inspector of Buildings .
Based on my review of the documentation, it is my opinion that
this dwelling was a lawful multi-family residence prior to the adoption
of the City ' s Zoning Ordinance in 1965 . It is my opinion that this
dwelling should be afforded the protection of Section VIII ( E) of the
aforementioned ordinance relative to non-conforming uses and this
dwelling ' s current use as a multi-family unit is permissible .
Thank you for your attention to this matter.
Very truly yours ,

RE: Property at 14 Essex St./ 44 Forrester St., Salem, MA
To Whom It May Concern:
As a resident of 44 Forrester St. during the period of 1949 through 1962, 1
would like to state that the property was occupied by four families. I have
always known the property to be a four family house. Two apartments have
addresses at 44 Forrester St., and two apartments have addresses at 14
Essex St.
During the period of time that I occupied an apartment at 44 Forrester St.
with my husband and children, my sister, Stasia Obuchowski, resided with
her family in the other apartment at this address.
My brother, Joseph Stanklewlcz, resided with his family in an apartment at
14 Essex St. The fourth apartment in the building, located at 14 Essex St.,
had several occupants. Mr. & Mrs. Henri Cote, brother-in-law and sister of
Mrs. Joseph Stankiewicz, resided at 14 Essex St. The apartment was also
rented to Mrs, Andrzejeski, who is now deceased. In 1960, the apartment
was rented to Mr. & Mrs. Henry Ahern, daughter and son-In-law of Stasia
Obuchowskl. When Mr. & Mrs. Ahern vacated the apartment, Mr. Joseph
Stanklewlcz elected not to rent the apartment, but to keep the additional
space for his own use.
My father purchased this property 64 years ago as a four family dwelling.
Prior to my marriage in 1947, 1 resided at 14 Essex St. with my father and
my two brothers and sister. During this time, each of the three other
apartments were rented. It has always been occupied as a four family
home, and the attached letter from Mass Electric will provide proof that
there are four electric meters 1n the house.
Please correct your file which incorrectly lists this property as a two
family dwelling. This property is unique in that It is a corner building with
two separate addresses on two different streets.
Please contact me at 745-0473, If you have any questions. Your prompt
at ntion to this Tatter Is appreciated.
