Subject: Code Interpretation: Number of Stories
Cogswell Place (Former Cogswell School)
No. 5 School Street, Salem, MA
Ladies and Gentlemen:
This letter will confirm my understanding of the outcome of Mr. Santos
meeting this morning in your offices with Mr. Steven Gauthier of the Loring
Development Corporation. As you know, Mr. Gauthier is the Licensed Builder
in charge of the above-noted project and I am the Architect of Record.
Mr. Santo agreed that the appropriate description of the building is "a three
story structure above grade, plus a basement partly below grade". Under
permits already issued, the basement will accomodate two dwelling units
(Permits #808-809 of 1987) with sig dwelling units on the upper three
stories (Permits #810-815 of 1987).
This description is useful to us in clarifying the fire protection requirements
for the project, including the necessary fire rating for the chimney
enclosures. Thank you for Mr. Santo's promptness in offering this
interpretation.
