City of Salem One Salem Green Salem, Massachusetts 01970 Attention of: Mr. James Santo Subject: Code Interpretation: Standpipe System Lr7 =Z Cogswell Place (Former Cogswell School) No. 5 School Street, Salem, MA Ladies and Gentlemen: At Mr. Santo's suggestion, Ms. Jessica Herbert and Mr. Steven Gauthier of the Loring Development Corporation met with Captain Robert Turner of the Salem Fire Department on the afternoon of 14 November 1987 in his offices. The purpose of the meeting was to review the requirements for a standpipe system as they pertain to the above-noted project. This letter will confirm my understanding of the outcome of that meeting. Mr. Gauthier, who is the Licensed Builder in charge of the project, informed Captain Turner of Mr. Santo's recent determination that the appropriate description of the building is "a three story structure above grade, plus a basement partly below grade''. You may recall that this matter was the subject of my letter of 30 September 1987 (copy enclosed). Mr. Gauthier then related my professional opinion that, under Section 1211.2.2 of the Massachusetts State Building Code (Fourth Edition), a standpipe system is not required for a three-story residential building (Continued) Office of the Building Inspector City of Salem, MA 21 October 1987 Page Two (Use Group R-2) having less than 10,000 square feet of area per floor. Captain Turner concurred in this interpretation. Therefore, we are hereby deleting the provisions for a standpipe system made in our drawings for the project and are proceeding with construction on this basis. This change effects Permits #808-815 of 1987. Please notify me if you require any additional information in this matter.
