Dear Ms. Scott:; I am writing tdyou as an owner of a food service establishment in Salem in opposition to the Smoking Ban in.restaurants and bars, Recent record .have dempnstrated that the-banning of smoking in restadi ;5,'and bars directly caused the closing of some ofthese establishments and indirectly caused the dosing of other town business. This will lead;to the erosion of the town's tax base as well as its tax revenuer For examplo; in Snrampscott;.the Bickford Mouse lost a significant amount of its business after the, smoking ban and one year later, had to,partition the.town to lift the ban based upon the docunmented.; . loss shoiiim since the ban. FOrtunately,the Town of Swampscott approved the partition:In W4kefreId,. town businesses Other than restaurants and.bars:Ihad closed citing the smoking bah as the cause of their demise .In,;Medior!,a wm reported attributable to the smoking tiara It is my opinion that the decision should be lbft"with restaurant and bar business owners and their customers. Restaurants and bars can decide whether they.want to.:have smoking or not, and the customers then can decide where they want to go.to eat and drink. Any ban.short of a Statewide implementation will drive business from Salem to neighboring towns which don't:have this ban such as Lynn. in my restaurant, the bar, operation accounts for 25% of the total receipts A'decrease in the bar revenue;oivill be extremely defrtmerttal to the:financil health of the busrrtess Having been in business in Salem for over twenty years,..!we,are all aware of the less than friendly environment all businesses operate under. Dear Chairman Milazewski: I wanted to write to you in support of a total ban on smoking in Salem restaurants and bars. I commend the members of this board who have taken a stand on what we all know to be harmful to our health. As quoted in The Salem Evening News on February le "Some of the restaurant and bar owners at last night's meeting said they would not be as upset if the Massachusetts Legislature passed a smoking ban across the state.A ban in one community,though,will send smoking customers across city lines to eat and drink:somewhere else,they said." It is very one sided to think that smokers will go across town lines to eat and smoke if a ban if in effect. What about those of us that already seek restaurants and bars outside of Salem to get away from the smoke. We might patronize these establishments if non- smokers were accommodated. Many bars and restaurants in Salem are too small to be able to segregate smokers from non-smokers. If smoking in Salem is so widespread and pro-,ides the financial stability for these businesses,we need to help smokers quit. Additionally,if smoking is banned in Salem,convenience store owners should be prohibited from placing sidewalk sandwich boards in front of their stores advertising cigarettes.
