Ms. Joanne Scott February 22, 2000 Board of Health Department 9 North Street Salem, MA 01970 Subject: Proposed Smoking Ban Dear Ms. Scott: As a follow-up to the meeting of 2-15-00, I am writing to you in opposition of the proposed Smoking Ban in restaurants and bars. As information, my partners and myself took over this business in May of 1999. Considering the nature of this business where many customers are smokers, a smoking ban would be devastating to our business as well as to similar establishments in this community. It is my opinion that the decision making should be left with the business owners whether they want smoking or not. As you are aware,the Town of Salem is extremely popular with tourists all over the world, especially during_ the Halloween Season. During our ownership, I have noticed there are more smokers than non-smokers. In my opinion, a Smoking Ban would discourage local customers as well as tourists from coming to our establishment,thus potentially putting us out of business of which we have invested our life savings. In addition, a Smoking Ban would be devastating to the Town of Salem regarding loss or revenue since Salem is noted for it's restaurants and bars.
