What better location than on the Derby Street Waterfront. As you are aware there was some vandalism done to the plaque before it was recovered by this department that you might want to consider having repaired prior to turning it over to Cynthia Pollack. Please advise me of your wishes and when you feel the time is appropriate I will see to the transfer to the Salem Maritime National Historic Site Sincerely 11liam H. March 9 , 1988 25 Hardy Street n Salem, Mass 01970 William Munroe Director of Public Property P City of Salem Salem, Mass 01970 Dear Mr P4un02 During the restoration of Fort Pickering (1987) a plaque commemorating the arrival of Count Casmier Pulaski (of Poland) to America was mounted on this site. The plaque along with others at Fort Pickering were vandalized and discarded, but was recovered and placed in the custody of the public property department, where it is now. After carefull consideration of the Polish Heritage Committee would like to have the Pulaski plaque placed in an appropriate location along Derby Street waterfront. We have suggested to have it placed along side the two plaques on Central wharf (one is dedicated to the missionaries who went to the South Pacific Islands, the other to Congress- man William Bates. ) In proposing this suggestion to the superintendent of the National Historic Site--Cynthia Pollack she advised me of the new landscaping plans for the Derby Wharf area and would be recepetive to the inclusion of the Pulaski plaque along with the other two. We feel this location would be most appropriate and satisfactory to the local Polish Community. We therefore would like to request that the Pulaski plaque be transfered to the Salem Maritime National Historic Site so that it would be included in the new landscaping plan being comtemplated.
