We received bids from 4 contractors that are much higher than we expected. To save money, we are proposing to eliminate the new back porch and 2nd floor deck and stairs. We would keep the first floor addition as previously proposed and approved by the Zoning Board and have just a rear entrance and landing instead of a covered porch. For the second floor, we are proposing a full 2nd floor addition instead of a partial addition with a large 2nd floor deck. This will eliminate the deck and give us a bigger master closet. It is actually cheaper for the contractor to build a straight up 2-story addition rather than a partial 2nd story. Attached are plans that compare what was previously approved by the Zoning Board and what we are now proposing. You can see that without the porch/deck we do not go as far out into the rear yard. The new addition will basically occupy the footprint of my current covered porch. I am hoping to go back to the Zoning Board for approval at their November meeting.
