This is a report on the measures taken to remedy this problem which had caused substantial settling and cracking of the existing slab. During our first site visit, we concluded that the integrity of the slab had been violated beyond repair and that a new support must be substituted; otherwise, the danger of the column puncturing through was present and likely. Per our recommendation, the contractor removed the concrete as necessary while shoring the superstructure. After excavating, a fully reinforced concrete footing (4'-0" square by 1-8" thick) was installed under the column. We inspected the reinforcing before the concrete was poured in place. The threat of serious failure was thus eliminated by the even distribution of the load on to soil supporting the new footing. According to the boring data available, the bearing material is comprised of loose fill and some settlement should be expected over time. These soil conditions are not ideal, but we believe that this solution is the only practical and safe answer to the problem. As for the settling that may be evident at the second floor in the future, we suggest that shim plates can be readily installed at the top of the subject column to compensate and restore level conditions as necessary.
