Good afternoon Kate,
Per your guidance, I am emailing you to request placing The Wandering S tage in front of the East India Square
Fountain on Thursday, September 21, 2023 for a Salem State Arts Showcase. Due to the location, I am hoping
that the SRA would be able to give this request its consideration at its July 12 meeting.
Salem State's Center for Creative and Performing Arts supports five academic programs in the arts: art +
design, creative writing, dance, music and theatre. We have been looking for an opportunity to showcase all
the disciplines downtown in an effort to make the community more aware of our quality offerings and to
promote our 2023-2024 arts season. Most of our events are free and any events that are ticketed are very
inexpensive with prices between $10-$20. We also offer "Salem Nights" at the Sophia Gordon Center for
Creative and Performing Arts throughout the academic year with free admission for Salem residents. You can
get a sense of our offerings by looking at our spring 2023 calendar.
In an effort to make certain this showcase has a basic level of production values and a stage for the
performers and a better viewing experience for the audience, we have engaged The Wandering Stage (TWS)
to provide our playing area and technical support. TWS is a mobile stage, light and sound setup created by
Salem State theatre alumnus Nathan McNiff. It has supported live events around the area including Lynn’s
Diversity Matter Festival, St John’s Prep Theatre, The Firehouse Center for the Arts outdoor summer theatre,
the MFA’s Juneteenth Community Celebration , City of Boston Pride Flag Raising, June 2023, and World’s End
(Hingham) Summer Solstice celebration, among others.
Documents with general information and detailed technical specifications about TWS are attached to this
email for the SRA's review. I have highlighted the dimensions of the stage and its power source below for
quick reference:
Stage: Trailer Dimensions(stage closed): 25 Long (w/touge)x8 wide x11 High
Stage Size without extensions:25 Long (w/touge)x15 wide x11 High
Stage Size with extensions:25 Long (w/touge)x19 wide x11 High *
Stage height from ground: 2.5
Awning size: 20x11 (awning is retractable for weather protection)
Materials: Aluminum/Steel
Generator: Champion 6250-Watt with Quiet Technology (2)

Partnering with TWS gives us an opportunity to bring Salem State arts down Lafayette Street to Essex Street
for a free community performance. We have been intentional about selecting a Thursday so that we are
downtown on a Farmers Market Day and benefit from more foot traffic.
Even Details
This will be a multi-disciplinary arts showcase featuring Salem State students studying in our arts programs.
We anticipate presenting short theatrical scenes, solo/duo dances, small music ensembles/solos/duos, and
poetry readings.
We envision 3 to 4 performance sets, running approximately 30 minutes each with brief breaks between each
set.
The performance window is 4 pm to 6:30 pm.
The performance will be family friendly and FREE for all to attend.
Funding to support this is committed by the Salem State President’s Office and the Center for Creative and
Performing Arts.
Event needs include:
1.Permission to place TWS on the Essex Street Mall in front of the East India Square Fountain beginning at 3
pm on September 21, 2023 with removal at 7 pm on that date. We think this location makes the most sense
for foot traffic and moving TWS in and out of a downtown space.
*2. Permission to use the larger stage footprint as shown in the specs shared above - Stage Size with
extensions:25 Long (w/touge)x19 wide x11 High
2. Permission to hold a brief rehearsal /sound check at approximately 3:30 before the performance and after
the TWS is set up.
3. Permission to perform from 4 to 6:30 pm as described under event details.
4. Permission to hand out our Fall 2023 performance calendar.
5. One day entertainment license for use of amplified sound, performing group will provide all equipment.
(Karen Gahagan/Director/Center for Creative and Performing Arts at Salem State to coordinate with Licensing
as advised by the SRA).
6. Access to nearby power supply to power sound equipment. (Karen Gahagan/Director/Center for Creative
and Performing Arts at Salem State to coordinate with Electrical Department as advised by the SRA).
6. We are not designating a rain date.
Thank you in advance for your time and consideration. I look forward to hearing from you about the July 12
meeting and please let me know if you have any questions or need any further information.
Best,
Karen

Good morning,
Some additional material for tomorrow night:
1. Nate McNiff, owner of The Wandering Stage sent a sketch with specs, stage closed. The vehicle that
will tow the stage will be detached once the stage is parked.
2. My best attempt at a diagram.
3. A couple of not centered photos I took this morning to show where we would like the stage to go. The
Village Tavern does have their outdoor seating check-in set up by the fountain but the entrance is on
the Witch City Mall Side (we wouldn't be blocking that) and we should be forward enough of the
check-in. And it's a Thursday at the end of September, not a Saturday night in July. Perhaps that station
won't even be active. I have also checked the Village Tavern's current online schedule of
entertainment, Thursdays are karaoke and dancing beginning at 9 pm.
4. We are not providing seating nor telling people to bring chairs. The point of multiple short
performance sets is to keep the stage activated for whomever is passing by.
Another question: the point of this effort is to showcase our programs and the upcoming season of
performances on campus. Are we allowed to hand out our trifold performance calendar brochure? We would
not be setting up a table. Just have a couple of students floating in the area with the handout.
Nate McNiff will be joining us tomorrow night. I sent him the meeting information but if you need to directly
invite him his email is: nate@thewanderingstage.com
Hope this is helpful!
Best,
Karen

3 Our Beliefs
The Wandering Stage was conceived with two core beliefs in mind.
1) The arts are imperative. The performing arts promote empathy and awareness while fa-
cilitating important conversations between communities. The arts bring people of all back-
ground together and provide common ground to build off of.
Pricing Information
Many factors play into the price of any given event. Please call or Email so we can hear all about your event and work with you to come up with a price the works for you!
2) The arts are meant for everyone. As public arts funding is disappearing ticket prices
often denies those with lower incomes the opportunity to engage in artistic events. By keep-
ing prices low and bringing performances outside we have the ability to bring more arts to
more people.
