East India Fountain-Liquid Spine Performance1 Kathryn Newhall-Smith From:Julie Barry Sent:Monday, November 21, 2022 1:18 PM To:Kathryn Newhall-Smith Cc:ktpustizzi@gmail.com Subject:Dance Performance in East India Square Fountain Hello Kate, I am reaching out to you today on behalf of performing artist Katie Pustizzi regarding her request to implement a dance performance in East India Square next summer. Due to the location being under SRA purview, she is requesting an opportunity to present the idea to them at the upcoming meeting on Dec. 14th at 6pm. Below are the details of the performance for the SRA’s consideration. Aurora Borealis Dance Company, has founded a new dance project titled "Liquid Spine" which explores aquatic ecology and conservation through dance and film. Liquid Spine is a global dance series that explores the interconnectedness of our water systems via the lens of ecology and conservation led by dancer Katie Pustizzi. The group recently created a Liquid Spine film in Gloucester funded by Salem State University in partnership with Seaside Sustainability. If you are interested in taking a look at this work, you can find the film here: https://vimeo.com/750915046 The company would like to have a group of professional dancers engage in a public, outdoor performance of the project “Liquid Spine”, in collaboration with a worldwide water conservation awareness event called Global Water Dances, on June 10, 2023 at 3:00pm. Global Water Dances’ mission is to "connect and support a global community of choreographers and dancers to inspire action and international collaboration for water issues through the universal language of dance". They are requesting to hold this performance in the East India Square Fountain, as they believe that this site-specific space would make for a stunning performance, free to the public and a great opportunity to explore Salem's rich history in connection with the ocean and the far east. Through the GWD platform, Liquid Spine will present a public performance in the East India Square Fountain, inspired by the fountain's deep history in illuminating the ever-changing coastlines of these shores. Viewers will be invited to contribute to the performance by writing their "coastline commitment". Dancers will react to these environmental commitments in real time via improvisation. Event Details: Liquid Spine is an Aurora Borealis Dance Company production in partnership with Global Water Dances. 4-5 Dancers will be a part of the performance. The performance will run for approximately 30 minutes on June 10th, starting at 3:00PM. The performance will be family friendly and FREE for all to attend. No funding from the City is requested in support of this project. Event needs include: 1. Permission from SRA to perform in and around the East India Square Foundation on June 10th 2023 from 3pm- 3:30pm. 2. Permission from SRA to hold a 1-hour rehearsal in the fountain on June 9th 2023. Time TBD. 3. Permission from SRA to perform on the rain dates of June 11th or June 24th should weather not be amendable to the performance on June 10th 2 4. The fountain water would need cleaned and sanitized a few days before the performance for the safety of the dancers. (Arts & Culture Planner to help coordinate with DPS) 5.
