McIntosh Inspector of Buildings City of Salem Salem, MA 01970 Dear Mr. McIntosh: The property on the corner of Derby and Bentley Streets has been a source of frustration to the community for well over ten years. The property is located in the Derby Historic District as well as the National Register in Washington, D. C. The property has been condemned for human habitation and has been poorly boarded up encouraging chronic vandalism to it and to the surrounding properties. The city planning department has tried many times to encourage the owners to rehabilitate the pro- perty or sell it, they have not been successful. They also tried to encourage developers to purchase the property and rehabilitate it and improve the quality of the structure to no avail. The residents in the area and especially property owners have had to live with the anxiety of a major catastrophe could occur in the area at any time , since inches are the only measure between many of the homes in this immediate area. A derelict building breeds vandalism not only to it but the properties in the area. The community cares about the street, the streetscape of homes and about our historic City of Salem. We sincerely request once again your assistance in resolving this problem that has faced the community for many years , we want a change in the attitude to resolve community problemssince it affects the quality of life for all who live near the derelict building. Many thanks for your assistance in helping to resolve this vital problem.
