Staff Comments:
• Freestanding Signs: These signs are for directional purposes. However they are quite large and, with the Wendy’s name and logo on
(some) of them, function as additional signage in addition to directional signage. They are not allowed in the Urban Renewal Area.
o Directional Signs: The applicant may have directional signs for public safety purposes so long as each sign does not exceed
12 sq. ft. per sign face and bear no advertising.
o Adjust Proposal for Freestanding Signs: If the applicant wants to retain the freestanding signs and recategorize them as
directional signs, the following must occur:
▪ Sign Design: Removal of the Wendy’s name and logo from all freestanding signs.
▪ Sign Area: Reduce the size of the Entrance sign by 3.8 square feet so that it is no larger than 12 sq. ft.
• Lafayette Street Sign Area Allotment: The applicant exceeds the sign area allotment for Lafayette Street signage. Even if the
adjustments to the directional signs are made as described, the applicant will still be 12.2 square feet over the maximum.
• West Façade Sign Area Allotment: There is no set regulation as to how to address signage on non-public way facing facades. In
similar circumstances an applicant was allowed half of the sign area allowed for the front façade. The applicant is allowed approx.
35 square feet of signage for the front; therefore 17.5 square feet of signage may be installed on this façade of the building. As
proposed, the sign on the left façade is 32.5 sq. ft.
• Internal Illumination: The wall signs all feature internally illuminated letters and logo. Staff has asked the applicant to consider halo
lighting or opaque letters with a thin outline that is illuminated. External illumination of the logo is a bit trickier; perhaps the logo
doesn’t need to be illuminated at all?

I’m at a new store now and can’t get the measurement right now but I did want to tell you we’re going to not wire the
directional signs so they won’t be illuminated. That way we can have the signs Wendy’s wants us to have but comply
with Salems requirements.

What is the measurement from grade to the top of the sign on the front façade?
What is the illumination on the freestanding directional signs? The Board will not likely approve of internal
illumination on those.
