Michael Sullivan Members Absent: Helen Sides Decision: At a regular meeting of the Design Review Board (DRB), upon a motion duly made and seconded, it was unanimously voted to recommend approval of the sign proposal as designed and conditioned herein. Referenced Plans and Documents 1. Sign Proposal, submitted by Marnie Greenhut, owner, Curly Girl Candy Shop, 140 Washington Street, Salem, MA 01970, submitted on 7/7/21. 2. Staff Comments dated 7/22/21. Condition of Approval 1. Consistency with Design/Plans: Should the applicant determine that the approved sign design may not be completed as detailed in the plans referenced herein and the following conditions, he/she/they shall return to the DRB to review proposed modifications prior to making any changes in the field. 2. Text Spacing: The spacing of the text on all of the signs shall be adjusted so that all of the text among the entire sign package has the same spacing. 3. Hanging Signs: a. Surety Bond: The applicant shall adhere to the surety bond requirements for signs hanging over public ways as found in the City of Salem’s Code of Ordinances, Section 4-47: Signs or Structures over Public Ways. b. Redesign of Arrows: The arrows on the two hanging signs assist in customers locating the business entry, however the red color of the arrows detracts from the signs themselves. The applicant shall work with the sign manufacturer on an alternate color scheme, preferably a black arrow with white text stating ‘Enter’ or vice versa. 4. Revised Renderings: The applicant shall submit revised renderings to staff for administrative review of the text spacing and the hanging signs prior to fabrication and installation of same. Findings 1. The DRB reviewed the sign proposal and found that the proposed signage is consistent with relevant sign standards and guidelines. 2. The use of font and color will attract customers’ attention in a positive and playful way and is consistent with the type of business this is – a candy store. 3. The window sign will not prohibit views into and out from the business, which will contribute to the downtown’s vitality.
