Design Review Board Sign Recommendation
1 Derby Square, Unit 2
Maison Vampyre Projecting Sign
Meeting Date: February 24, 2021
Members Present: Paul Durand, Chair, David Jaquith, Glenn Kennedy, Catherine Miller, Marc Perras, Helen
Sides, J. Michael Sullivan
Members Absent: None
Decision: At a regular meeting of the Design Review Board (DRB), upon a motion duly made and seconded, it was
unanimously voted to recommend approval of the sign as designed and presented.
Referenced Plans and Documents
1. Maison Vampyre Signage Proposal, prepared by Concept Signs, 57 Bridge St., Salem, MA 01970.
2. Staff Comments dated 2/17/21.
Conditions of Approval
1. Consistency with Design/Plans: Should the applicant determine that the approved sign design may not be
completed as detailed in the plans referenced herein, he/she/they shall return to the DRB to review
proposed modifications prior to making any changes in the field.
2. Surety Bond: The applicant shall adhere to the surety bond requirements as found in the City of Salem’s
Code of Ordinances, Section 4-47: Signs or Structures over Public Ways.
3. Window Signage and Graphics: Window signage is not permitting on windows above the first floor of the
building. If the applicant would like to apply graphics to the second story windows, he/she/they shall submit
the graphics to the Salem Redevelopment Authority and its Design Review Board prior to installation.
Findings
1. The DRB reviewed the sign proposal and found that the proposed projecting sign is consistent with the
standards and guidelines in the SRA Sign Manual and the City of Salem Sign Ordinance.
2. The size of the sign is modest, and its text is scaled for pedestrians and does not detract from or obscure the
existing architectural features of the building.
3. The members found that the requirement for blade signs to be stationary was not appropriate for this sign
for the following reasons:
a. The applicant is using the existing bracket that does not allow for the sign to be pinned stationary.
This is preferable to installing a new bracket that would require drilling new holes into the building’s
historic brick façade; and
b. The signs are small and thus the wind load and movement of the signs will be minimal.
Signature of the SRA
By the signature below, I certify that this recommendation accurately reflects the actions of the Design Review
Board.
