Re 7 Derby Square: handrails.
Shane,
A site visit was made to view the stairs at 7 Derby Square—both the front entrance, and the
stairwell facing Old Town hall. After reviewing photos of those stairs with the Building
Commissioner, it is determined that handrails are required on both sides of each set of stairs
("1009.12 Handrails. Stairways shall have handrails on each side ..." 2009 International Building
Code.)
Number 7 Derby Square is located within the scope of the Salem Downtown Renewal Plan. Any
physical changes to building appearance must be approved by the Design Review Board for the
Salem Redevelopment Authority.
In summary:
The Salem Building Department requires that handrails be installed.
The handrail design must comply with international Building Code and be approved by the SRA
Design Review Board.
I apologize for any initial confusion.
Please call if you have questions.
