Botts Court_6 - narrative16 February 2023
Salem Historical Commission
Chairman and Board Members,
This is a request to change the color of the fence between the rear of 6 Botts court
and the Carriage House/ garage.
6 Botts Court was built in 1897 and the garage was built by the owner of #7 Hamilton Street in
1905.
In the 1950’s the garage and surrounding property was incorporated into the 6 Botts Court
property. When the garage was built, it was not flanked by a fence but by a 6ft. high brick wall.
In the 1950’s the garage door was enlarged, the brick wall demolished, and a fence installed.
Careful scraping has revealed that the original color of the fence and the window trim of
the garage was a grey color similar to Benjamin Moore’s historic color, “Wickham Grey.”
I am proposing painting the fence and trim on the garage with BM Historic color Kingsport Gray
(HC-86).
Although Wickham Grey is an acceptable color, I feel that the warmer tone of Kingsport Gray
complements the brick and brown of the garage and the colors of the 6 Botts house.
I believe it will harmonize and relate best with both the house and garage.
Several photos that show conditions have been submitted.
Note that I painted the posts to give you an indication of what the new color would look like.
Thank you for your consideration,
Lou Sirianni FAIA
