WAIVER OF THE DEMOLITION DELAY ORDINANCE
It is hereby certified that the Salem Historical Commission has waived the Demolition Delay Ordinance
for the proposed demolition as described below, as per the requirements set forth in the Historic District's
Act (M.G.L. Ch. 40C) and the Salem Historic Districts Ordinance.
Address of Property: 3 Smith Street
Name of Record Owner: Megan Valentine
Description of Demolition Work Proposed:
Demolish more than 50% of roof.
Per the Demolition Delay Ordinance, the Commission made the following findings:
1) The Commission voted unanimously to find the building historically significant as it is a
contributing resource in the Bridge Street Neck National Register Historic District; and
2) Based on the revised renovation plans by Eng Arch Design dated 5/1/24 (see attached image),
which includes a new façade dormer with shallower pitch roof and through-cornice windows
while preserving the overall scale of the ca. 1840 cottage, the Commission voted unanimously to
find the roof not preferably preserved and the work may proceed on the improvements shown on
the plans.
