Ruck's Creek, a tributary to the South River situated mostly where the Salem Post Office now stands, marked the
center of one of Salem's first neighborhoods. It was named for the Ruck family that included Thomas and John
Ruck, Salem merchants and mill owners between about 1630 and 1651. The great Salem architect and woodcarver
Samuel McIntire was descended from the Rucks. Ruck's Creek became an important center of Salem industry, Q'
maritime commerce and shipbuilding. The lands near the creek were called "Knocker's Hollow" as all along Z z
Norman Street (then Norman's Lane) and High Street the knocking sound of shipbuilders pounding oak trunnels y c ¢
into new ship frames could be heard. The Gedney House on High Street retains a Knocker's Hollow wood ship's ' o
knee in its frame. U G cr n
V .
Crombie Street was laid out after the Revolutionary War along a brook that emptied into Ruck's Creek. It was o }L
named for Benjamin Crombie, an innkeeper, who lived at #13 Crombie Street. Crombie Street was a working class s•
residential district with a Mechanic's Hall, brick church and houses of many styles on narrow lots that ran down the u
hill. The gambrel roof of#18 Crombie Street marks it as a colonial Georgian Style house, even though it was mostly = +-
l c cn
built about 1830, in the late Federal period. Federal, Greek Revival and Italianate Style architectural elements add v •
to Crombie Street's charm. Crombie Street marks the spine of the Crombie Street Historic District listed on the
National Register of Historic Places.
Boston Custom House keeper William Pike was one of the earliest residents of#18 Crombie Street. He was a close o
friend of Salem's famous author Nathaniel Hawthorne. #18 Crombie Street, also known as the Wendt House, was
. restored in 2004, the Hawthorne Bicentennial Year. c 1= o
