It is hereby certified that the Salem Historical Commission has determined that the proposed:

as described below does not involve an exterior architectural feature or involves a feature covered by the exemptions or
limitations set forth in the Historic District's Act (M.G.L. Ch. 40C) and the Salem Historic Districts Ordinance.

Description of Work Proposed:
Repoint rear (south) wall of masonry building with the following conditions:
• Mortar to be removed by hand or with small pneumatically powered chisels to avoid damage to masonry.
Mechanical tools shall not be used on vertical joints;
• Remove the loose mortar of the lintels and sills;
• Repair the lintels and sills inkind as needed;
• Mortar to be Type N (1 part cement/1 part lime/6 parts sand;
• Mortar to match existing color, grain size, texture, and tooling/pointing style;
• Cleaning of masonry surfaces to be by gentlest means possible, such as washing with low pressure water and soft
natural bristle brushes. High pressure washing and sandblasting is not allowed;
• Waterproof coatings and sealants shall not be used;
• Caulk all window trim; and
• Apply 2 coats of Benjamin Moore Historic masonry paint on previously painted surfaces to match existing color.
There will be no changes in color, material, design, location or outward appearance. Non-applicable due to being in-
kind repair. Upon completion of above work, please notify Historical Commission staff as final sign-off is
required to document compliance with this Certificate and approved plans.
