BUILDING FORM
ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION
Describe architectural features. Evaluate the characteristics of the building in terms of other buildings within the
community.
Located at the southeast corner of Flint and Warren Streets, 14 Flint Street is a simple 2 1/2-story, side-gabled residence
which is set on a brick foundation. Sheathed in wood shingles, the house is capped by an asphalt roof with two brick
chimneys rising from the rear slope. On the five-bay, Flint Street facade, a set of wooden stairs with stick balusters and
simple newel posts rises to the center entry which is sheltered by a small gabled doorhood on plain wooden posts. The front
door displays a six-panel configuration, the upper two are glazed. The original Greek Revival pilastered trim around the
front door was removed and replaced by the modern roof in the 1960s. Windows have molded surrounds and 6/6 sash with
blinds.
Extending to the south and set back slightly from the front wall of the main block is a two-story wing displaying a saltbox
roof profile and modern fenestration including horizontal,tri-part windows. The rear elevation of the wing has a projecting
rear entrance and continuous 2/2 windows.
HISTORICAL NARRATIVE
Describe the history of the building. Explain its associations with local(or state) history. Include uses of the building and
the role(s) the owners/occupants played within the community.
According to research prepared for Historic Salem, Inc.,this house was constructed in 1839 for James Stone, bricklayer.
The street was known as Dean Street until 1888. Stone purchased the land from Joseph Wallis in two transactions in August
and October 1838 for a total of$471. Tax assessments suggest that the house was under construction in 1839; in 1840 it
was assessed at$1,500. A well known mason, Stone(1789-1878)worked at his trade in Salem for a period of sixty-four
years. He apprenticed on the brick"Tontine Block"on Warren Street and his last job was the gas reservoir on North Street.
Stone was also the contractor for the Pickering Dodge mansion on Chestnut Street and the North Church on Essex Street.
L Upon his death in 1878,the Flint Street property passed to his daughter, Emily Manning, wife of Otis T. Manning and then to
Mrs. Manning's daughter, Ellie Howe. Mrs. Howe left her property to Gladys Waterman and Louise Howe who sold it to
John and Georgette Merrick in 1962 (King 1988).
