Nothing showing. FA received a Master box alarm. Workman state that the alarms went off and they thought they smelled an odor of natural gas in the basement. Myself and E1 crew went to the basement with the worker to investigate. We found no gas odor but there was an odor of burning. We checked the master fire alarm panel and the indication was for the second floor. Tower 2 crew went to the second floor to investigate. They reported a heavy smoke condition on the second floor that was getting worse. I declared a working fire and 2 additional pumps were sent to the scene(E5 and E4). Tower 2 continued to find the source on the 2nd floor and E1 stretched a line to the 2nd floor. E2 secured a hydrant and fed E1. At this point the smoke condition extended to the first floor and the basement possibly via the HVAC system. We were still unable to find a source. E5 went to the basement and E4 checked the 1st floor for possible sources. Tower 2 also gained access to the attic area and reported it to be smoke free. All companies were using TIC's to attempt to find the source. Eventually Tower 2 found a electric heating unit in an office space as the source. There appeared to be a fire involving the unit and the air filter, E1 extinguished the small fire with a 1 3/4 hand line. Ventilation was started via PPV but was time consuming because a lot of the windows were painted/stuck shut. We ventilated the 2nd floor, 1st floor and basement areas. FID Brophy was on scene and electrical was called to confirm that power was disconnected to the heating unit. Building PTN's also were on site. Fire Marshall Schaeublin was also on site and will work with the PTN"s with some issues that he had. Building turned over to the PTN's. Command was terminated and the box was recalled.
