The following two items were to be addressed: 1. The 4-hour Fire Walls are to be constructed such that the roof on the non-burn side will remain standing if a fire causes a collapse of the roof on the other side of the wall. Reply'': The walls in question are Fire Walls; dividuig''the'structure into different buildings based on maximum allowable areas: To'our understanding, Section 908.1 of the Massachusetts State Building Code requires that the new Fire Walls have sufficient structural stability under fire conditions to allow collapse of the construction on either side without collapse of the fire wall. Based on this requirement, we have designed the new fire walls to withstand both a lateral load on the wall of 5 pounds per square foot and to support the weight of the remaining structural steel framing, roofing and full snow load which would drop down on top of the wall in the event of a collapse on one side of the wall I 2. The corridor wall separating the H-2 Occupancy Repack Room 101 frons Exit Corridor 102,needs.to have an increased fire rating. You have indicated that it should be a 4-hour wall. Reply: Table 602, Fire Resistance Ratings of Structure Elements, indicates that fire enclosure of exits in a Type 2B Protected building shall be 2-hour. Our drawings presently indicate this as a 1-hour wall. We will increase it to 2-hour construction, using 2 layers of Y2" Type "X" gypsum board on 4" steel studs at 24" o.c. I hope that this satisfactorily answers the 2 items that you brought to our attention. I will be in Salem 'on July 24 and 25,and hope to confirm this correction with you at that time.
