Outline Specifications for Kitchen Exhaust Shaft
General Scope of Work
0.0 The intent of this work is to provide a new continuous uninterrupted 2 hour fire
rated kitchen exhaust shaft from the underside of the second floor through the
roof. The rated shaft is to be supported permanently at the underside of the
second floor by non-combustible steel framing fireproofed with Albi-Clad TF
intumescent film fireproofing. The new steel framing is to extend to the
basement, and be supported on new concrete footing.
0.1 The uninterrupted shaft is to be constructed in accordance with the
manufacturer's specification and installation guide for USG Shaft Wall systems.
The system designation is 2 Yz' 25 gage CH and JR metal framing at 24" on
center, with V Gypsum liner panels, and (2) layers of Yi' firecode C gypsum
panels. Both layers of gypsum, inside and out, must be made continuous by the
existing wood floor and secured above and below to the metal framing. The
metal framing is to be braced to the existing brick side walls using JR tracks tap-
con screwed to the brick, and top and bottom JR tracks tied back to the brick
where the panels terminate top and bottom.
0.2 The kitchen exhaust shaft is designed to function with a fully welded exhaust flue
made continuous from the second floor to the roof, and fully inspected by the
Salem Building Department, and in compliance with all applicable.Codes.
0.3 The shaftwall UL fire rating is based on UL Design U416 System B or U438. The
Salem Fire Department may have specific requirements that exceed those of the
rated system. The contractor is to contact the Salem Fire Department for review
of the installation of this shaft and for inspection requirements during
construction.
0.4 The weight of the shaft is to be fully borne by steel framing at the underside of
the second floor. The space between the shaft and wood framing at any given
floor, attic, or roof shall be filled with fire sating or fire sealant,
0.5 The contractor must visit the site and shall review existing conditions and their
affect on the work.
0.6 The contractor shall be solely responsible for all means and methods of
construction employed on this project including all temporary bracing, support
and protection of the existing structure as required to maintain safe and stable
conditions. Any sequences of work or methods indicated or implied in the
documents are presented only as assumptions on which the design of the
permanent installations are based and are to be considered as a suggested
----- option for review by the contractor. Contractor-shall be solely-responsible for - - -
maintaining the safety and stability of the structure as well as any occupied
spaces in proximity to the shaft construction work area.

0.7 Contractor shall field verify all existing conditions and dimensions and shall
coordinate all dimensions. Notify the engineer of any discrepancies that would
affect the installation as shown.
0.8 All work shall conform to applicable requirements of the Massachusetts State
Building Code, Seventh Edition, and accepted construction practice.
0.9 Refer to sketches SKS-1 through SKS-5 as well as USG Applications Guide
Specification and Albi-Clad TF specifications (attached). If there is any conflict in
the specifications, the more stringent requirement shall govern.
0.10 Contact engineer for periodic observation of the shaft construction, and have all
components reviewed on site prior to closing in the shaft framing.
Metal Framing

ASTM A446, Grade D, possessing a minimum yield of 50,000 psi.
1.2 Galvanized framing products shall be coated in accordance with the
requirements of ASTM A525.
1.3 Protect materials stored on site from exposure to weather by impervious cover or
shelter. Materials shall be stored flat and in a manner to prevent distortion.
1.4 Screwed Connection Requirements:
A. Screw shall be of the type, size and location shown on the manufacturer's
specifications. Screw attachment to the brick shall be with 5/15" x 2 %" Tap
Con.
B. Screw penetration through jointed metal materials shall not be less than
three exposed screw threads.
C. Screws shall be provided with corrosion protective coating that will remain
intact during installation.
D. Contractor shall refer to installation instructions published by the screw
manufacturer and ASTM C-954 for minimum spacing and edge distance
requirements and torque requirements.
1.5 Field cutting of steel framing members shall be by saw or shear. Torch cutting
--- - will not be permitted except by written approval of the engineer-of record.
