212 Washington Street/ Riley Plaza (Marina's Newsstand): Discussion and vote on
proposed a-frame sign.
SRA Decision
At its meeting on October 12, 2016 the SRA voted unanimously (4-0) to approve
the proposed a-frame sign at 212 Washington Street (Marina's Newsstand) as
recommended by the DRB. The applicant shall paint the sign frame all black or
all white and remove all newspaper logos from the sign.
Recommendation
At its meeting on September 28, 2016 the Design Review Board voted unanimously (6-
0) to recommend approval of the proposed a-frame sign at 212 Washington Street/
Riley Plaza (Marina's Newsstand), conditional upon using the 3'x2' frame (shown in the
materials as holding the soccer team advertisement), that it be painted one uniform
color(either black or white), and that the sign itself not contain any logos of
newspapers.
Proposal
The applicant, which operates a small newsstand within the Riley Plaza parking lot, has
removed some non-compliant signage, and requests to replace a non-compliant
wooden a-frame sign with a Tx 2' black metal a-frame sign that it currently owns (see
the enclosed photo of the a-frame sign holding a soccer team advertisement. The
applicant would use a resized version of the existing white sign shown in the enclosed
packet with the list of newspapers and newsstand hours.

I am proposing to add a portable sign in front of my business.The sign will be a 3~ free standing
metal sign.
As you can see in the attachments,the sign will be a metal structure that will be painted white. My
business name, Marina's Newsstand as well as the publications I sell will appear on the sign.
I would like the location of the sign to be within 10 feet of the entrance to my building.The location
meets the requirements of the City of Salem sign permit process.
The proposed location of the sign will not will not impede and pedestrian or vehicle traffic.The sign will
out during business hours only and will be stored inside the establishment during non-business hours.
I look forward to discussing this proposal with you at the next meeting of the Design Review Board.
